East End Rally Community Vision Session Notes

 Charles Young Center is very important – what happens with the future?
 R&H Festival – moving it Masterson Station – bad idea – wouldn’t move Woodland Arts festival
 R&H has meaning here – originated here
 Empowerment and meaning will go beyond just the plan – communication back and forth for implementation – accountability –

 Table 7 – our concerns were – making sure that there is water and sewer repair – lots of stuff still needs to be done – must move from talk to action – end result right now!
 Safe streets – lower speed – speed bump
 Traffic calming ideas
 Public safety – active police presence – don’t wait to be called – stop and walk – say hi -
 Sidewalk and street repairs
 Pedestrian friendly streets – alternative transportation, transit shelters
 Minority businesses – need supermarkets now – not giant – decent clean stores – good to shop in – be proud to shop in
 Build new stuff just like they do in every other neighborhood –
 Decent clean stuff –
 Multiple minority businesses
 Findlay market idea would be good for this area
 Take care of seniors – look out for older people
 Jobs and training for everyone
 Historic sites – loved the idea of IMMAG
 East End signs – like that idea of pride – IM on sign?
 Housing that’s more like affordable single family housing – not units that rent is as much as buying
 Nice street trees
 Decent place where people can own and be proud of
 If you own your house you have a sense of pride and accomplishment – don’t own not the same
 Do more to promote home ownership to improve pride and will change a whole lot on the East End
 Build in this community? make it for us…
 Renovations- Charles Young must be brought up to 2008 – keep this as a part of community
 Upgade park like they do in everyone else’s neighborhood
 Computer labs for kids
 Tot lots – more for youth to do – clean safe and supervised – it takes a community
 More neighborhood meetings – keep the momentum going
 Lyric Theatre – what are we waiting for? How did the city end up with it?
 Code enforcement – it’s a mess – ignore problems – just enforce the codes – where’s code enforcement when you need it
 Not forget our faith – we need help with our churches – churches need to help us

 Table 6 – diversity needed in community
 Commercial corridor on 3rd street – and Race
 Residential behind on both sides
 Seasonal market
 Need all the services, banking, grocery stores, pharmacy
 Police walking and on bike
 Trolleys would be nice in area
 7th street small businesses
 Entry signs
 Historical markers
 Involve all ages
 Street projects
 Build and rehab houses
 Involve all business people
 City programs to develop properties – keep involved in that
 Charles Young center should remain as neighborhood center
 Agree with other tables

 Table 8
 Wanted to make it more family friendly - not been that way for a long time – Charles Young expanded or improved – cant hold all the kids in the neighborhood –
 Need family friendly housing in neighborhood
 Look out for senior citizen’s housing – house may look abandoned but its not
 Findlay Market good idea – but community runs it not the city
 Like the East End sign and historical markers – more pride
 In Roundabout near school – public art the represents the East End – William Wells Brown
 Who is William Wells Brown? Was a slave born outside of Lexington – escaped, became activist and author – fiction writer – lived in Boston – when he died every paper in Boston covered his obituary
 Like to see more family recreation – challenge park, skate park
 Repair Charles Young
 Better community image
 Community garden not very well publicized

Importance of being a part of WWB Neighborhood Association – cant represent neighborhood if no one shows up – but if we all come together – downtown will listen – we can do things in numbers

Put it all in action – don’t wait

Wrap Up – Common Themes
 Action is needed! Short Term – not long term
 We as a people must come together – together we are strong
 Commercial piece – key corridor along 3rd street – Race and Lewis – not infringe on residents
 Housing is real important – economic factors shouldn’t sweep away diversity/historic residents – “balance”
 Lyric – city has $6m in budget for 2009 – deadlines: completed and open by 1/10/2010 – if not, then there are penalties for city
 IM walking health trail in the shape of a horse
 In order to work – it will take more than dreaming – property owners – get surveys
 What’s going to be done to take the hopes, dreams of people and what can be done to engage property owners?
 Get property owners here – what is happening with empty and vacancies?
 Where are pastors?
 The people that should be here aren’t here – negative energy
 All of this is about you – cant expect others to do your work for you – there are ways of addressing these problems together
 Economic opportunity – like to see assurance that contracts go to minorities on public projects – enhance training opportunities – document that
 City is responsible for a lot of helping – code enforcement, city has the power
 Economically – minorities want to benefit from the construction and improvements
 We can make landlords be accountable – neighborhood residents can make change
 This is for real – determining what updates will go into city’s plans
 People define the plans – share with people how important input is – a way for everyone to have a voice in this – lets get together to create a plan to put a stamp of approval – collectively have trust in what is happening – now we can have a clear vision for what should happen in the future

 Must recognize history – why aren’t there good historical markers in neighborhood – like race track, BG Aspendale – good signs
 Remembering history is important to pass along to new generations

East End Listening Session June 12
East End Community Listening Session

June 12, 2008

* Redevelopment should extend grid pattern, connect streets
* Paying job program for teens
* Walking track around school – safe area – not have to leave neighborhood
* Why are we here? How is it going to affect Elm Tree Lane? Will it make walking from Elm Tree Lane more safe? How is it going to allow me to walk to a
   grocery store?
* Need vocational training within walking distance
* Planning should include a mentoring program – weekends/evenings, so that more people can volunteer
* More health care – more people aware of health issues – family counseling – young parents
* Affordable housing – incentives for builders to create homeownership? Similar to west end at the Arbors…
* There should be the same programs for parks and rec everywhere – William Wells Brown school – wants to be part of the community – fill out surveys to
tell parks and rec what you want
* East End must take care of problems – not pass problems off – strengthen neighbors
* We as a community must come together – then our voice will be heard
* Like to see a grocery, drug store, greenery, flowers, we’re not second class citizens because we live here – we deserve better
* We don’t want this area to get unaffordable – and affordable means really affordable
* If we come together we don’t have to take what other people say we need, lets get what we want
* Urban county government has a grant for free to get homes remodeled
please call downtown to be aware of that program
* To make neighborhood better will take a lot of things, but one key is that we must offer things to your people positive things to do
* Everybody in neighborhood must work together – not get things shoved down throats
* 3rd street can be built back where we can be proud of the area
* Older people need assisted living areas where they can live in own homes
* Crime is all over, but it is only spoken of in Black areas
* Must build youth from inside out
* Good to know that plans haven’t been finalized BEFORE the community meeting
* East End is most under appreciated neighborhood in the city
* Must build trust – continue to meet with people to build trust
* Must discourage "urban removal" – we want it be something to be something that will encourage people to stay in community – cultural, educational,
   economical, social
* Hopefully this meeting will be first in an on-going dialogue with "downtown"
* People must come to the Saturday work session – these folks can help you with vocations that you want at community center
* Need an organization to help renters – understand leases, help with landlords
* Lyric is moving forward – encourage people to get involved in public meetings – construction will begin at first of year
* What is the future of Charles Young Center?
* Bring in better businesses – pride of ownership
