Team Reports
 Table 2 – Mr. Franklin – Vision statement: to create and promote a diversified family neighborhood fully integrated with overall vision of Lexington – economic development, education, affordable housing
 Ideas - health care – environment – underutilization of land resources, abandoned buildings, trash, hut like neighborhood, too much street parking – crime and despair
 Want to encourage civic engagement – eliminates apathy
 Gives a voice “downtown”
 Economics – lack of commercial property – more retail needed – groceries, pharmacy, dining, entertainment – shouldn’t have to go outside neighborhood to do something - should be able to do that in your neighborhood
 Lack of assisted living – need more – more ownership – incentives for home owners to fix up home, help find financial assistance to do that
 Citizenship and values – needs to be some sort of community relations/educational program that police are not enemies – police are there to assist community, make homes safe, improve quality of living
 Pictures – show parks, commercial developments, recreational, sidewalk cafes,
 Increase home ownership in area
 Reduce crime – increase police presence – abandoned lots area a barrier to increasing home ownership
 Whatever affects Lexington should affect this neighborhood as well
 Team 5 – women who live in the community – want change – don’t want to fight about – want positive change – government must understand that change must come –
 The use of Charles Young for community events – community should be able to use the center – don’t want to see building torn down – Lyric work must start – want monies to be used – Lyric must start yesterday
 Mixed income housing –rehab older homes – senior housing – low end, high end, don’t want to exclude anyone – must increase home ownership – seniors should live in affordable housing and be included in process
 Training programs for teens and adults – mentoring, literacy, education for young girls, parenting classes – yesterday! No more debate about it downtown
 Health education programs – what we eat is what causes it –
 Affordable retail shops, pharmacy chain, national grocery store –
 Drug dealing in stores, gas stations, where are the police?
 Active neighborhood associations work closely with council person –
 Better communication between community, youth and law enforcement
 Industry in East End, job fairs, employment for residents, use Charles Young for job fairs to bring businesses into and offer job fair set up – tell community what they are offering
 More Lex Tran routes – accessibility – maybe even a trolley
 Having greenspace like IMMAG – walking trail, playground – gardens, pleasant place to walk – maintenance of greenspace is vital – cant neglect parks – walking track near new school – beautiful greenspace

COMMENT – first district council woman has been in meetings – walked area, put in signs…never not responded to what we’ve needed –

 Table 3 – mission statement – East End is the place to work live and play –
 Places to live – redoing older homes and refurbishing – new multi-family homes – streets lined with trees – very nice
 Neighborhood meetings are important
 Neighborhood association is important
 Medium density redevelopment area – similar to campus – not in the middle of East End but on outskirts
 Job training facility in the neighborhood
 Smaller Wal-mart/Kroger and pharmacy

 New playgrounds – safe
 Youth programs to keep youth involved
 Recreational activities
 MAP – businesses will line Race Street – already zoned for business – brought in parking structures more friendly to environment – mixed building useage on outskirts – transition into homes on Race Street – bring 5th street down and over – take 6th Street all the way
 Not just police presence –active police participation
 Free clinic
 Better roads
 Movie theater in business area – first run movies
 Why is pool closed? Put pools back
 Need public restrooms
 Kid trolley – safe and rotates thru the community
 New traffic pattern will cause a problem with speed – need speed humps – make it safe
 Barber shops
 Recreational leagues in this area – why isn’t there a East End T-Ball/Softball League – football, soccer,
 Mentoring community – neighborhood grandma –
 Not become a high end condo area after developing – generations can afford to live here
 Put vocational center in vacant area –within walking distance

 Table 4 – Kids table – recommend youth only session – did some drawings
 Pictures – dreamed really big – place for birthday parties in neighborhood – pet store – craft store – no place near to get stuff – a place to relax – there’s no place to have leisure space – ice cream shop – nothing here – day care with basketball –
 Need bus shelters
 Outdoor restaurants – variety of types – chains or go local if possible - No bugs
 Want clean stores, and bathrooms – stores are not clean now
 A mini-walmart – neighborhood store – nothing giant
 Whatever stores are here, people must be willing to clean up trash – Thursday and Saturday
 Need a hang out place
 Very proud of black heritage – need to honor it in neighborhood
 Best choice of transportation is bicycling
 Computers – at camp, at school, and church – highlighting where computers can be used
 Like the kiddie park idea
 Like roots and heritage festival
 Trolleys look old fashioned
 Like new houses rather than older houses
 Don’t know much about history of neighborhood
 Public market v. grocery – public market has healthier foods
 Signage is important – “East End” sign – give identity to community
 Streetscape and banners – like the colors – “shiny streets” – clean streets –
 Church and faith very important – like to learn stuff there
 Entertainment – like museums – like to go see plays and art
 Prefer to drive to movies
 Need more outdoor youth activities
 Ok with walking to library downtown
 Neighborhood pool indoors
 Want and arcade
 Shoe store
 Are we utilizing local health care facilities?
 Open Lyric Theater
 Have more open air eateries
 Yellow bikes
 Pharmacy a must – late hours until at least midnight
 Social services effective and affordable
 Statue at IMMAG
 Local talent for public art
 Banners on street – use money for advertising on banners for local community
 East End Sign have picture of IM – “home of…”
 Public market keep vendors diverse and local
 Expand R&H toward Main Street
 Family days in parks
 Vocational training for health care workers in neighborhood
 Diversity – we are all neighbors embrace Latinos
 Upgrade sidewalks for pedestrians to encourage walking
 High density development “looks very expensive”
 Very proud of community – need youth day for community visioning

 Green sheet was helpful – values – grass roots values are important – more than input – its about power – what the people want should be what comes to the neighborhood –
 Diverse neighborhood – diverse houses, everything doesn’t have to look alike
 Must recognize history – why aren’t there good historical markers in neighborhood – like race track, BG Aspendale – good signs
 Remembering history is important to pass along to new generations
 Good training for jobs in neighborhood
 Must have residences, services, retail, all mixed in together – don’t want just a residential character
 New services should be residential in scale – 2 story mixed use – shops on bottom, residences above
 Picture of market is preferable than picture of large grocery store – fresh food, less parking lot – fits with neighborhood
 Drug store in neighborhood
 Equitable treatment in streets and sidewalks – does need improvement –
